Nursery
The Nursery children have a real interest in 'Parties' so we have been busy looking at why people have parties, what sort of things are celebrated when having a party and the Nursery children over the next few weeks will be planning a party, from creating their own invitations, designing their own wrapping paper and cards, playing party games, looking at how parties have changed over the years and what food we have at parties and why? etc.
We have already started with a pretend camping trip party where we put tents up in the Nursery and had a picnic by a pretend campfire, what fun we all had.

P6/7
We've had an exciting week - developing our use of the HAM scheme where the children are motivated to work hard on the variety of activities presented to them. This week some of us worked out great ways to add and subtract multiples of 10 and 100 quickly, while others were working with rounding and finding numbers greater than or smaller than a target number, and trying to get closer to their target number than their partner.

We've begun the process of self assessment and target setting in the Big Writing scheme - a hugely important skill. We've also come up with some rather exceptional wow words - a couple of our favourites are pandemonium and redoubtable!

In science, we started listening to sound, making sound and working our how sound is made and changed - we felt our voice boxes vibrating and watched an opera singer's vocal chords vibrating.

We were delighted to start our new term of French with Mrs Walker and Mrs Campbell has been putting us through our paces for cross country.

We had our first peek inside one of the WWII boxes we collected from the museum in Inverness containing WWII items such as evacuee suitcases and gas masks!

Finally, well done to the responsible P7s who have been teaching the wee ones to stand still and try not to worry if a wasp comes near - they have been a bit of a pest this week! (the wasps - not

the wee ones!)

P1/2/3.
P.1 have been doing very well at learning the names of the Oxford Reading Tree characters and how to read them. They have also been learning the sounds of the letters s and a. We have been doing lots of counting and we counted up to 50 one day! They have also been practising writing the numbers.

P2/3 have also been doing counting but they are counting hard numbers like 498, 499, 500, 501, it is very tricky when you have to write numbers which cross a hundred! Some of the work has been counting backwards or counting in 2s and 5s. P2/3 have been working hard on their spelling and they will be getting homework today.
We have started reading The Hodgeheg and we thought the spoonerisms Max says were hilarious! “I got bot on my hittom!” was very funny. We have also been talking a lot about hedgehogs.

P.1 had P.E with Mrs Campbell for the first time on Thursday and they did very well.
On Thursday we wrote postcards to Ms Scollay, she hasn’t read them yet so we hope she likes them!

P3/4/5

We have been working hard learning about the Titanic, we have learned about the departure of the boat on her maiden voyage and watched a very interesting DVD loaned to us by Mr Mcguire.  We were able to make notes about what we saw and we have used this to create newspaper reports about the departing ship.

We have been using the new maths scheme, which has has really challenged us.  We have been developing our knowledge of whole numbers and have even been thinking up to 100,000.

One of the questions which foxed many of the children this week was to find 6 different digits which add up to 500.

_  _ _ + _ _ _ = 500   Juliana was the first to find the correct answer but it kept us thinking!

Mrs Middleton has helped the children think about icebergs in science, ready for us to think about the next phase of the Titanic's voyage.

School News

Letters went out today from all classes to let you know what your children will be learning about over the course of the next term.

Letters went out to invite all parents to attend the parents forum meeting on the 1st October at 7.00pm, I will also display the new maths scheme.  A parents workshop will be arranged later in the term.

Kindest regards

W S Scollay
