Another busy week flies by.

P1/2/3 06.09.12

This week we have been learning more about hedgehogs. We made lovely leaflets about Autumn.

P.1 are doing numbers to 10 and they are very good at them. P.1 were learning the sounds for t and p, they learned s and a last week.

P.2/3 have been working on numbers to 100 and numbers to 1000. Some of the P.3 work has been very tricky, adding on 10 and adding on 100 to all sorts of numbers!

We made beautiful nests for hedgehogs out of shoeboxes, they look so cosy. We haven’t made the hedgehogs yet, it’s a bit early for them to hibernate.

P6/7
We began to write some super endings to our our horror story - using, VCOP!
We're getting faster at our tables with the games we play against each other.
We had a VERY tiring swimming session last week, so we will be getting very fit indeed!

In science, we worked out what mediums sound can travel through - gasses, liquids and solids

- and we pretended to be molecules that the sound waves had to vibrate.

We are beginning to bring in some marvellous artefacts, stories and toys related to WWII - it's fab, keep it up. The classroom will look like it comes from 70 years ago very soon!

P3/4/5

This week we have been busy creating a Titanic freize in our classroom.  We have created the ship arriving in Queenstown Ireland.  The children have even represented some of the real houses from the town.

We have been working hard on our editing skills and have edited and rewriten our Newspaper reports of the Titanic leaving Southhampton.  The children have worked really hard with some excellent results.

We have also been continuing to work hard on our place value.  We have been adding 10, 100 and 1000.

Nursery

The Nursery children have had fun this week exploring and being creative with shapes. The party theme is continuing and the children have designed their own invitations and cards. A party in space has been suggested and the children are in the process of making a rocket ship to take them into space where they want to boggie with music and pretend they are floating. We have also had our 1st visit to the Gym hall with lots of energic games and an obstacle course to tackle.

The Nursery also won 2nd and 3rd place at the Invergarry produce show with paper plate masks they had made.

We shall be officially thanking BAM NUTTAL for the new fence on Monday morning, where we will be getting our photo taken for the paper.

Any other people who are willing to help with the Country Dance catering please please get in touch.  We still need raffle prizes.

Nursery
The Nursery children have a real interest in 'Parties' so we have been busy looking at why people have parties, what sort of things are celebrated when having a party and the Nursery children over the next few weeks will be planning a party, from creating their own invitations, designing their own wrapping paper and cards, playing party games, looking at how parties have changed over the years and what food we have at parties and why? etc.
We have already started with a pretend camping trip party where we put tents up in the Nursery and had a picnic by a pretend campfire, what fun we all had.

P6/7
We've had an exciting week - developing our use of the HAM scheme where the children are motivated to work hard on the variety of activities presented to them. This week some of us worked out great ways to add and subtract multiples of 10 and 100 quickly, while others were working with rounding and finding numbers greater than or smaller than a target number, and trying to get closer to their target number than their partner.

We've begun the process of self assessment and target setting in the Big Writing scheme - a hugely important skill. We've also come up with some rather exceptional wow words - a couple of our favourites are pandemonium and redoubtable!

In science, we started listening to sound, making sound and working our how sound is made and changed - we felt our voice boxes vibrating and watched an opera singer's vocal chords vibrating.

We were delighted to start our new term of French with Mrs Walker and Mrs Campbell has been putting us through our paces for cross country.

We had our first peek inside one of the WWII boxes we collected from the museum in Inverness containing WWII items such as evacuee suitcases and gas masks!

Finally, well done to the responsible P7s who have been teaching the wee ones to stand still and try not to worry if a wasp comes near - they have been a bit of a pest this week! (the wasps - not

the wee ones!)

P1/2/3.
P.1 have been doing very well at learning the names of the Oxford Reading Tree characters and how to read them. They have also been learning the sounds of the letters s and a. We have been doing lots of counting and we counted up to 50 one day! They have also been practising writing the numbers.

P2/3 have also been doing counting but they are counting hard numbers like 498, 499, 500, 501, it is very tricky when you have to write numbers which cross a hundred! Some of the work has been counting backwards or counting in 2s and 5s. P2/3 have been working hard on their spelling and they will be getting homework today.
We have started reading The Hodgeheg and we thought the spoonerisms Max says were hilarious! “I got bot on my hittom!” was very funny. We have also been talking a lot about hedgehogs.

P.1 had P.E with Mrs Campbell for the first time on Thursday and they did very well.
On Thursday we wrote postcards to Ms Scollay, she hasn’t read them yet so we hope she likes them!

P3/4/5

We have been working hard learning about the Titanic, we have learned about the departure of the boat on her maiden voyage and watched a very interesting DVD loaned to us by Mr Mcguire.  We were able to make notes about what we saw and we have used this to create newspaper reports about the departing ship.

We have been using the new maths scheme, which has has really challenged us.  We have been developing our knowledge of whole numbers and have even been thinking up to 100,000.

One of the questions which foxed many of the children this week was to find 6 different digits which add up to 500.

_  _ _ + _ _ _ = 500   Juliana was the first to find the correct answer but it kept us thinking!

Mrs Middleton has helped the children think about icebergs in science, ready for us to think about the next phase of the Titanic's voyage.

School News

Letters went out today from all classes to let you know what your children will be learning about over the course of the next term.

Letters went out to invite all parents to attend the parents forum meeting on the 1st October at 7.00pm, I will also display the new maths scheme.  A parents workshop will be arranged later in the term.

Kindest regards

Week 2 !

Sorry for the lateness of the Blog this week, I was way laid on Friday.

We had a super week last week and the whole school is beginning to settle down to a routine again.  We have all been focusing hard on the improvement to our language work, in particular writing.  All the classes last week have been working on the BIG writing system.  We have been assessing where the children are at and deciding how we are going to tailor our teaching to meet their needs.

P123 wrote letters about their holidays, as did P67 and P45 wrote a diary entry pretending they were about to board the Titanic the next day.

All classes have also been issuing reading books to all the pupils.  P1 have talking about reading books and are learning about the Oxford reading tree characters of Biff and Chip. Please can we all make a big effort to look after the reading books which go home, we many have to charge if books are lost as we need everyone of the reading books for the children.

We are all beginning to use the new Maths scheme, and this is proving very popular with the children.

P123 have been adding and taking away, P345 and P67 have been learning about place value and whole numbers.

P67 went swimming and really had fun, Mrs Campbell has begun to train the children for the Cross Country Race later this term.  We have many pupils from P4567 who took part in the initial training I hope they continue to want to take part!

Best Wishes

Welcome back! Session 2012 - 2013 begins!

It was wonderful to see everyone again after the holidays.  My word the children come back to school looking so grown up.

We were delighted to welcome our new P1 children to the school.  They all seem to have settled in really well.

Mrs Walkers class all created birthday cards which will be given out to each other over the course of the year.  The children went to the gym for PE.  They have enjoyed making dog walking pictures and have been doing lots of gluing and glittering.

P123 have been introduced to number. P2 and 3 have been doing really hard sums, they have been doing addition.  They have been writing sentences and matching words to meanings.

PE will be in Thursdays and Fridays, please make sure the children have their gym kit.

In Ms Scollay's class the children have been doing lots of spelling this week.  We have also created a Newspaper of all our holiday reports, I hope to try to upload them for you to look at.

We created mirrors after reading the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.  Our magic mirrors show our portrait, what we like and what we would like to do in the future.

We have also been learning about the Titanic.  We were all blown away by the trailer of the film Titanic.  We have created a TITANIC list of questions that we would like to learn about the Titanic.  This will be our topic for the coming term.

We also tried out the new Maths scheme today, the active games and activities really got us thinking about our maths, and the new textbooks were well recieved.

Pr 6/7 have started their swimming and we would like to thank Sheree Fraser for accompaning the children.

P6/7 have been having a WW2 sing soing as their topic this term will be WW2 Bombs and Blackberries.

P6/7 will  have been getting our feet under our new desks and they started on the BIG WRITING experience.  This is a new system for the teaching of writing which the whole school will be embarking on throughout this year.

A parents work shop will be held later in the Autumn to explain this new method of teaching.

The nursery has bloosmed this term with 15 children in the class.  Lesley Hall has joined the nursery to work with Alison Bowcott.  They have had a busy week allowing the children to explore the environment.  There has been paint mixing and lots of outdoor play.  They really enjoyed a session with balls out on the playing field.

The Hmie report will be published on Monday and you will recieve a copy of the report on Monday from the children.

Please note that I am teaching Tues - Friday and am unavailable during this time.  If you would like to see me please make an appointment so that I can arrange a suitable time.  I am sorry that I cannot be more flexible, but due to council cut backs on management time I only have Monday's within the school office.

I look forward to the fun and challenges of the year ahead.

Best Wishes

Summer is coming closer

Another busy week has passed, but post Hmie we are beginning to see the light of the holidays.

P123 and the Nursery had their final den building session this week with the ranger and we now have a lovely den covered with foliage and branches in the Nursery Garden.

P45 have loved designing trainers, there has been some really super designs made, we have a creative bunch of pupils in that class.  Next week we will begin work on some paper trainers and an advertising campaign.

P67 have been getting ready for the K factor and the end of term memories of P7.

A school newsletter should be out in children's school bags this afternoon and the web edition should appear after the weekend.

Next week P45 and P67 are going on a trip to Auchterawe to do some work in the forest with the ranger, I am sure that that will be fun.

P67 are travelling to Landmark on Thursday as a reward for good behaviour this term.

P123 are performing a concert to Mrs Walker.

So lots to look forward to, I hope that many of you will attend the school prize giving on Friday at 10.00am at the Church of Scotland.  We have many prizes to be given out and a number of presentations, so we would love you to join us in our celebrations.

If you wish your child to have a canteen lunch on Friday please tell Mrs Curly by Wednesday morning.  The school bus will leave school at 12.40 on Friday.  Pupils can leave school after the church service if their parents are in attendance and happy for them to do so.  If not they will be dismissed from school at 12.00.
Bus pupils will wait in bus class until 12.40.

So the count down begins! yipppppppppppppppppeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

All the very best wishes
